Public Liability - Indemnity Levels
Public liability cover can offer three different levels of cover:
£1,000,000, £2,000,000 and £5,000,000
What levels of cover do I need
If you are a sole trader who only operates on standard sites, for instance shop, offices, private dwellings, guest houses etc. Then normally a level of £1,000,000 or £2,000,000 would be more than adequate.
If you are working normally on all of the above but have contracts, which also include schools, colleges, residential retirement or nursing homes or government or council properties then they might insist that you have a minimum of £5,000,000 cover. This is set by the council or government as a minimum level for all contractors.
Cover extensions for limits of £10,000,000 or more?
You might occasionally come across contractors or customers that insist on you having more than £5,000,000 as the contract or premises you are working on could exceed this amount or the liability risk to the people that are there rather then the property is much greater. You can purchase an excess layer of liability cover in addition to your standard £1,000,000 £2,000,000 or £5,000,000.
This can be purchased as a one off or an annual policy. For instance if you require £10,000,000 for a certain contract and you only have £5,000,000 we can supply an excess layer for the £5,000,000 at an extra cost. This means your current insurer will cover the first £5,000,000 of any claims but should a claim exceed the £5,000,000 you excess layer insurer will cover any amount which exceeds the first £5,000,000 up to a maximum of the £10,000,000.
The same can apply to £1,000,000 and £2,000,000 purchasing extensions to the required amount.
Employers Liability - Indemnity Levels
The limit for Employers Liability is set at a minimum of £10,000,000 and na>o lower limits can be obtained. Higher limits can be obtained upon request if needed.
