Vehicle Seizures Due To No Insurance!

Under the revised powers granted to the police under the Serious and Organized Crime Act (SOCA), officers started using data from The Motor Insurance Database (MID) in November 2005.

The Motor Insurance Database (MID), is a database where ALL Insurance Companies record ALL policies taken out with them. The Police have full access to this database where they can check if a vehicle is Insured or not.

  • The Police DO NOT need a reason to stop any motorist
  • Your vehicle can be seized immediately by the Police if the is NO Insurance on the vehicle, or the driver does NOT have a valid driving license.
  • A seizure notice is given to the driver of the vehicle, requiring the owner or keeper to claim it WITHIN 7 days or the vehicle will be disposed of.
  • To claim, the owner MUST pay any charges prescribed, and provide proof of a valid driving license and proof of insurance
  • If the above is not provided, the police can dispose of the vehicle 14 days from when it was seized.
  • The Police are the MID's biggest customer, making over 3.8 million enquiries per month.
